Euro Area Posts 0.1 Percent Decline in Retail Trade Volumes
The retreat follows a more optimistic December, when retail trade volumes had climbed 0.3% in both the euro area and the EU.
On a yearly basis, the picture darkened further — the retail sales index fell 1.0% in the euro area and 0.6% in the EU when measured against January 2025, underscoring persistent pressure on consumer spending across the bloc.
Broken down by sector, food, drinks, and tobacco volumes declined 0.2% in the euro area and 0.3% in the EU. Non-food products, excluding automotive fuel, edged down 0.1% in the euro area while holding flat across the wider EU. Automotive fuel bucked the downward trend, rising 0.4% in the euro area and 0.3% in the EU.
Among member states for which data were available, Germany posted the sharpest monthly contraction in total retail trade volume at 1.2%, followed by Poland at 1.1% and Slovenia at 1.0%.
On the other end of the spectrum, Luxembourg led monthly gains with a 1.5% increase, trailed by Romania at 1.3% and Croatia at 1.2%.
